Beware RV Consignment Deals

Cut and pasted from Greg Gerber's "Daily RV Report" blog.

Be very careful selling or buying a consignment vehicle from an RV (or car/truck) dealer who may be on shaky financial footing. There has been an ongoing thread for several months on the Escapees Forum about a couple who traded an older motorhome with a loan balance for another used motorhome which was owned by another couple sold on consignment by the dealer. In short, the couple ended up still owing the loan balance on their trade-in which was sold and gone, a balance on the newer motorhome which they could not obtain title to or register, and the dealer was shut down and disappeared.

"RV owners want their units back after service center closes

JACKSON, Mich. -- Ever since Larry's RV Service Center closed this summer, Somerset Township resident Sally Seals had attempted to get her Dutchman Pop Up camper back , but to no avail.

She renewed her efforts when she contacted authorities in Blackman Township and learned she was not alone.

Blackman Township Public Safety Director Mike Jester said several people have come in asking the police to help them retrieve their RVs that were locked up at Larry's. "We can't break into someone's property and get their camper," Jester said. "That's a civil matter."

Jester said he encouraged them to contact an attorney, but Seals said she has hesitated because she doesn't know how to find the owner, Samuel David Carpenter. Carpenter's attorney, Bree Vincent, said she had not heard claims that people have not had their RVs returned.

Claiming attorney-client privilege, Vincent said she couldn't discuss a recent case involving Carpenter in which Circuit Judge John McBain ruled the prior owner, Douglas Ohm, was owed the remaining balance and interest on the business loan, totaling about $366,000. There are also federal and state tax liens totaling more than $131,000.

In June, Seals signed a consignment contract and left her camper at the business for Carpenter to sell. After Carpenter's commission, she expected to make about $3,000. But several weeks later while on vacation, she found out the business had closed. She's been to the business at 2501 Lansing Ave. several times and has "no clue" what has been done with her camper. The business is locked up.

"I tried calling them several times, and eventually the phone was disconnected," Seals said."
