Towing with Mitchell, Clutch, Cam & Twins

[Sled Puller]

This is not an advertisement, this is my exprience. I assume some of you may be interested.

Grossed at 14,000. Light duty for alot of guys.

I doubt Dave would sell this particular set up to a hot shotter. I chose my parts because I wanted a Sled Puller that COULD tow when I needed to.

The clutch is a twin disc that rattles when it is disengaged. Empty, It drives nicer than my two previous single disc clutches.

Will it drive nicer than your clutch? I don't know.

Loaded, it was harder to get a smooth engagement, as it likes to hook. Getting proper rpm down was needed. I got onto it in a short period of time.

Rolling at 70 mph, there is no more noise out of the drivetrain than there was with my last two.


The twins give very quik spool -up, virtually no lag.

The cam on the other hand, likes rpm. With 3:54 gears and 285 tires, it likes to run at 2000 up.
When loaded, you need to shift at 3000 - 3500 to come back in, on the power.
Nice thing about having rpm, is you don't have to hammer 5th gear up mountains to keep speed. I blew past a lesser Cummins lugging away at 40mph with his trailer.
I was in 4th gear about 2500+rpm and just stepped on down and let the twins spin. I think I was at about 800 degrees.

Loaded on the flats, the engine really likes 70 mph in 5th, running 60mph, I felt better in 4th.
I lugged her hard in 5th a few times, on a long grade, and it always pulls away, just the groans everything makes is not good I feel. It only hit 1100 lugging and adding power.

Any hill I hit the bottom at 70mph, it crested at 70, with egts well under control.

If your cam shopping, you may want to ask about Daves other grinds, this was the full blown race cam, pretty radical. Empty I did not notice the difference as much as loaded.

I got 17 mpg towing the empty trailer, and I am not sure what I got loaded, it was worse, I'm sure, as I was all over the place, in storms and wind with a 24 foot boat with a fly bridge.
