Trailer Wiring Info

I have a 96 with the factory tow package and back in November I noticed that the green continuity LED on my brake controller was on without the trailer. It would be fairly bright one time, dim the next or not on at all another. At about the same time I started having intermittent problems with the ABS light coming on too.

I could meter a high resistance ground on the blue brake wire. I checked all the usual, trailer plug and wire harness connector behind the rear bumper. I had already used dielectric grease in those and found that the problem was still there when the wires were disconnected. I found an electrical schematic for the factory trailer wire harness and discovered another wire harness connector located under the truck behind the left front wheel. There are two connectors and the one with the blue trailer brake wire going through it had water in it.

After cleaning one and checking the other I put dielectric grease in both and have had no further problems with either the trailer brake continuity light or the ABS light coming on.

Though this might help someone else.
