Major Charging System Problems

Started up the truck this morning and I started smelling burning electrical. I noticed the alternator was making a lot of noise like it was under a huge load but the voltage at the battery was only 12.4 vdc at best(all accessories off and winch and compressor relays turned off). Then the output dropped off to only battery voltage and the check gauges light came on. I shut down the truck and let it sit for an hour, came back and started up the truck and all is working normally again. The alternator had gotten real hot and I am now concerned with reliability factor. I ran the codes and truck came back with a P1682 (low voltage), P1693 ( companion code) and P500(no input from the speedo). I can understand the first two codes being related but the last one has me confused.
I think I remember somewhere (could not find it in a search) that a problem with the starter could overload the charging system could cuase a similar problem (new aftermarket contacts will fix the problem). My starter did not sould like it was still engaged while the engine was running so I am at a loss to what was causing the power drain.
So any input or suggestions would be great, right now the truck will only be driven very short distances until I can locate the problem.
Also because of the overload, I am considering buying a 205 new amp alternator and needed wiring to replace the OEM alternator. The company is out of Texas and uses a new OEM altenator the is upgraded for 205 amps, has anyone tried using one of thier alternators?. The ad on ebay is located at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW .
Sorry for the long post,
Kyle
