Question Rough surging at idel when cold

Help i have a 2002 4x4 with the auto tranny. so far its an ok truck i've had the following problems; bad valve body in tranny (wouldn't shift into first, fixed warranty) bad "u" joints aft shaft (45000 mi and they failed no grease fittings?!!!) Oil leak on gear box front of engine ( Bad gasket, loose mounting bolts? fixed warranty) Lift pump (while it never failed, after reading the last issue of TDR i checked it and found it to be badly rusted, electrical connections all but gone, replaced, new one from Dodge cost $356 not the $175 as quoted in the article) Now when i start the engine it surges almost like a detroit 6-71 with a sticky rack. Once warm it almost runs normal. I know about the pre/post heaters thats not it, almost seems like something is out of sync. any ideas any one? I don't have a diagnostic computer to check trouble codes, on my old 89 there was a way to check the codes with out the computer ( i know it was mecanical engine) any way to check the codes on this truck ? Manual is not too helpful. My 89 was a rough rider and loud but the guy i sold it to is still draging boats all over the place its got close to one million miles on it (on the orignal tranny! a 727auto) this truck (the2002) is not off to a very good start, this is progress? I work on diesel engines for a living (EMD 645-12's and 16's) But the computer control stuff i'm playing catch up. Thanks Ed Dankievitch I can be reached at Dankievit@aol.com
