My friend's '99 is dead in CT

He just called me and said that the only code that it is throwing (viewable via the odometer display) is the infamous P1693...no other codes.

It's a '99 3500 regular cab 4x4 with a DTT auto. It just died going down the road and now it won't restart.

He has a Smarty on it, but left the hardware at home. He's going to have it towed home and then use the Smarty to see if he can yank any additional codes out of it.

About a year ago, it ate a crank sensor and the failure mode was the exact same scenario...but he didn't recall the codes it threw back then.

Any help or words of wisdom would be appreciated.
