Help????

Just got home frome work and I am getting a burnning smell, like some wires are getting hot. I think the voltage regulator is going bad. It only smells when the voit meter is at the third mark and it will sit there and bounce around. Is this regulator in the alternator or external? there is something that sorrta lokes like one on the driver side inner fender but not shure. This is a 92 160hp 4x4 duelly please help need truck by monday.****Justin
