Truck won't start

I have a 97 12 valve that when I start it, it fires, and immediately dies when I let go of the starter. It seems like the fuel solenoid switch to me but I don't have the back issues of the TDR that mentioned them (issue 10 I think). Can I just apply 12 volts to the solenoid? There is nothing in the service manual about the solenoid. Any ideas?????
