    Holset H1C exhuast housing size

Could some one help me out on this one please, I'm tring to determine the exhaust housing size on my H1C turbo, 1990 5. 9 engine, the turbo had be rebuilt prior to me purchasing it 4yr's ago, The turbo/exhaust housing is still in the truck but with a trouble light and a mirror I've located and jogged down some casting numbers, Here goes on the front side of the exhaust housing there is a casting stamp # 2 J 8, on the back side the casting stamp reads Holset (with a large raised letter A ), then closer to the exhaust flange the casting stamp #'s are TW1, 5538055 ( I believe this is the identification # 5538055 ) then there is also the # 12-128-01, Like I stated I'm reading this by use of a mirror so there may be a mistake in my # identification but I believe them to be true, Any help or finger pointing to an known Link will be a definite asset,

    Thanks fella's

Should be some more numbers on the back side of the exhaust housing, IIRC the 90's had a 21 sq cm housing. Therefore, you would see 21 somewhere back there, or in the case of an 18. 5 sq housing 18 or 18. 5.

That's the numbers 21/18 that I was expecting to find on the exhaust housing, No luck, only the numbers stated above

Inside the exhaust runners is an indented casting. Usually goes unnoticed until close inspection, removal would be necessary. . .

If it is stock, it has an 18. 5. If not, who knows.

Ok more info from my end this may not amount to much but the turbo had been rebuilt, before my purchase of the truck! But I would think every thing is still OEM the compressor/exhaust turbine/housings, The tag location on the compressor outlet has a reman identification tag, but those # don't jive either,

How about a physical size difference can the size be determined by measuring the Width/height of the exhaust housing

Some may wonder what the biggy is about this exhaust housing!

I'm looking to upgrade to a 16cm2, but I sure would hate to start an R & R and purchase a 16cm2, only to find that the turbo is 16cm2 equiped

The 3526739 indicates it's a 18 cm2. I'll try to find a link for you later, I downloaded the pdf at some point.

Thanks guys I found a link that suits my purpose:

    TRANSMISSION: AUTO/MANUAL

    YEAR: 1990

    ENGINE: 160 HP

    ORIGINAL PART NO. 3528771

    CUMMINS PART NO. 3802302,3802148

    HOLSET PART NO. 3526739

    C. H. R. A. PART NO. 3523317

    FRAME SIZE: H1C

    TURBINE HSG. SIZE: 18 cm2

However the exhaust housing may have been changed during this rebuild! without a exh housing casting stamp that Identify's it as a 18cm2, It may still be something else but I will assume it's a 18cm2, I may have one up for sale if it does turn out to be a 16cm2

Well I'm back to square one on this one guys, I purchased a modified hx35 turbo with a 16cm2 exhuast non-waste gate, the fella I bought it from said it was a Piers diesel modified turbo, The casting number on the back of the turbo looks like a 16 but the casting number inside the exhaust port looks like 18, anyways this is my delema, the exhaust housing on my truck should be a 18cm2 according to the rebuild tag but it is actually smaller in physical size than the HX35 modified exhaust housing, Can there be a smaller physical size diff and still have more cm2? I did a real rough measurement on both housings the hx35 is about 6" across and 2. 5" wide, my existing turbo is about 6 across and 2" wide, I can't identify the original exhaust housing by the exh port casting # because it is still on the truck and in use,

I don't know i'm from the old school and smaller outside meant smaller inside not bigger, could I be wrong on this one?

My 1990 has an "18" cast into the turbine housing and the 1993 has a "18. 5" cast. The 1992 has 21 cast into it!!!

Greenleaf that doesn't help much, I know what it's supposed to have on as far as the casting stamp goes, But the turbo on the truck the casting stamp cm2 number isn't there, The modified hx35 the casting stamp isn't very clear it could be 16 or 18 but in the port runners the numbers look more like an 18,

I find it quite unlikely that you'll have a modified Piers HX35 hybrid turbo with an 18 cm housing. But if you do, there's not much merit to "update" to a 16cm housing. The difference from 21 to 16 is a big step, but from 18 to 16 IMHO not worth worrying about.

On another note . . . the 16cm cost only 150 bucks brand new from Piers. If you buy it, install it, and find out it is IDENTICAL to the one you have, you might be able to sell your "old" 16cm for $120 or so, easily. Investment: $30 bucks. How much value to you put on your sleepless nights worrying about having a too big one?

Do you want part numbers. I have part numbers.

The assy number of the turbo will not do any good.
